MODERN NOIR

CONCEPT

Inspired by a lyric from 'The Old '97s' hit Crash on the Barrelhead (1999).

You're gonna crash on the barrelhead, son

And do the walls know what you've done?

Do they listen in on you?

Do the walls know what you do?

It was that second line - do the walls know what you've done? - which prompted me to try and illustrate the private moments when we feel burdened by trauma, exhaustion, addiction, loss, negativity and self-doubt. It became immediately apparent that the best way to capture the real demons showing up on the face or in the posture was to have subjects in the places they go to feel low.

I chose not to glamorize the subjects and utilized cinematic-styled lighting to accentuate the mood. Printing at 24" x 36" allows the audience to step into the space and feel connections between themselves and the subject.

If you feel like this series matches the vibe of your business, it can be installed as a short-term gallery. Do something interesting to get patrons talking.
